“Wondering about the story behind this sign, placed high on the outside gymnasium wall…”

That is what my friend Lana Miller wondered after seeing this plaque at the Ocean View High School gym:

Helping a Daughter Help a Mom

10241927_1459247850.9333.jpg

I saw this story posted in an HB Facebook forum and wanted to try and help it gain farther reach. A moving story – both literally and figuratively – and I hope we can all help. From Paige Godfrey:

This weekend, my family’s and my world fell apart a little with the sudden and horrible news that my mom has metastatic ovarian cancer. Because of this, I am making an emergency move back from OK to CA, and will be helping care and offering my support to my mom and family wherever possible.

It is my greatest pleasure to be able to do this.

Many of my friends and friends of the family have reached out to me, offering help with getting me back to CA to be with her.

We are overwhelmed and blessed by the amount of people showing us such love and support in this scary time. My mom is so tough, and such a fighter. I know God has his hands on her now. God has sent us so many friends to be with us, and we are so grateful.

The best way that I thought I could allow any and everyone who wants to help with my move was to set up this campaign. Any donations that anyone wishes to give will be used SOLELY for the purpose of covering my moving/preparation expenses and/or to the cover some of my expenses like bills, etc.  as I am having to suddenly be without a job, and am not sure when I will get another.

Thank you all for every kindness that you have shown my family. If you are not able to donate, please know how much I appreciate your support in PRAYER.

“Fear not, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41 10

Call For Old Boards – Helping a Surf City Artist

12415553_10208387667995652_756857906_o.jpg

“I was diagnosed at 42 with Parkinson’s I’m now 50 years old I started painting as therapy for my tremors… I’ve never painted in my life… I just started doing this as therapy and I only started painting 3 years ago and I don’t know why I can paint I never could do any of that kind of thing before but maybe it’s something to do with Parkinson’s and it changing the way your brain works I’m not sure but at least I have an outlet and I can live vicariously…”

Those are parts of notes to me from a woman named Kristen Schonfelder, who grew up as a surfer girl in Huntington Beach. Eader Elementary, Edison High; you get the picture. She lives in San Jose today, but she’s back in HB frequently, to still try and get out a little bit on a board and to reconnect with the place that shaped her. She loves it here. And she needs out help.

12822664_10208916207448808_453553513_o.jpg

The vibrant and creative art she began creating just after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, has evolved. Her canvas today? Surfboards. She paints exquisite designs on boards to sell, donate (she donates some of her proceeds from sales to the Michael J Fox Foundation For The Study of a Cure) and give to friends. It is her salvation. Despite the many bottles of pills on a kitchen counter adjacent to the quiet living room where we sat last week, it’s the painting that is obviously her medicine. Her salvation.

Her passion is, was and will always be surfing. She gets through the most difficult days today painting waves and ocean and surf on boards.

But she needs boards. Any boards. Scrap boards. Old boards. New boards. Anything will do. You can simply donate the old board to her. Or she will even paint one for you if you’d like. I’ve gotten to know Kristen over the last few months and her artistic hopes and dreams are  matched by her courage and will to fight the disease she has. She is remarkable. And she needs our help.

You can see more of her work here or contact her via email at kristengail44@gmail.com to arrange the pick up of any surf boards you might be willing to have picked up for Kristen.

Fit To Serve? A Planning Commissioner’s Most Outrageous Post Yet

11873351_10153579155723330_2211927141899441636_n.jpg

Earlier this week I posted a story regarding a citizen’s complaint again planning commissioner Michael Hoskinson. The citizen, Kim Kramer, was called a “messianic jihadist” (whatever that is) by Hoskinson at a recent meeting, from the dais. Kramer’s comments outlined a pattern of ethics code offenses by Hoskinson. Additionally, in the same spirit of intolerant extremism, Hoskinson’s Facebook and Twitter feeds are clogged with hundreds of posts regarding “Agenda 21,” and a host of other intense, far right wing, governmental/political concerns, real or imagined.

As I wrote in my earlier piece, he is certainly entitled to his rights to expression. But everyone else is too, and so I’m voicing that I find his behavior, both from the dais and in his social media posts, to be highly inappropriate and offensive.

But then there is this.

The most extreme case in point, in my opinion, was this public post of his on Facebook from November 16, 20015.  The link that he shared was no less than a call to literally KILL EVERY MUSLIM. It is chilling. And it is fanatical.

Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 7.30.49 AM.png

This is the introduction, with several excerpts following:

Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 7.39.11 AM.png

Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 12.07.39 PM.png

Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 12.07.02 PM.png

Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 12.06.46 PM.png

END ARTICLE SAMPLE———

Where does one even begin? This is the single most hateful, intolerant, extremist manifesto I’ve ever read in my life. Shared by someone that occupies a very important slot in our city government.

Why is it ok to assume he stands by the post? Because he stated it himself. He’ll never share anything he does not support or believe in:

8493A2D2BC0A4A38AC826C916B9413AA.png

As to what he means by, that people are “not going to like the outcome” if they merely try holding him accountable for his own words, I’m not sure. But it certainly sounds unsettling; even threatening.

Was this person vetted at all?

If you’d like to email councilman Erik Peterson (who appointed Hoskinson) to express your concern over this appointee you may reach him here: erik.peterson@surfcity-hb.org. (I’ve already spoken with Mr. Peterson, a friend of mine, a number of times about Mr. Hoskinson’s behavior). Some, including Hoskinson himself, have suggested that I’m in some way trying to curb his freedom of speech. That is absurd. He is allowed to share and express whatever he likes. My point is, what about the bias his views create as a planning commissioner? What if a Muslim (or any other group he regularly insults) appears before the planning commission? How would that person ever feel they are getting an unbiased judgement from Hoskinson knowing he’s shared an article advocating their death? As a planning commissioner, I think he has compromised his ability to uphold the ethics standard he agreed to adhere to.

Mr. Hoskinson, in the face of my earlier article, was defiant, unapologetic and in my view, quite arrogant. I don’t expect much from him on this issue either. But I do think our elected officials need to do something about this. There is no way someone that shares this kind of hate speech, in my opinion, should be officially representing Huntington Beach in any capacity. It’s not just about the causes that officials fight for. It’s also how they comport and conduct themselves. They represent the city and, in turn , all of us.

10 Questions for the OVSD From Staff, Parents and Others

IMG_3166

libation

For the last several months I have been approached by OVSD staff, parents in the district and Huntington Beach citizens that happen to be following the Ocean View School District in the news. As far as the staff and parents, their collective attitude is that, when it comes to the questions they have, they are not comfortable presenting them directly to the school board. Each person conveyed to me that they were fearful of challenging this board, particularly Trustee President Gina Clayton Tarvin, in any way, shape or form. According to them, the president’s reputation was such that they feared retaliation should they be identified as “troublemakers” for voicing their opinions. Those are their words, not mine. The parents with children in the district were the most cautious of all. They have heard stories about teachers making a child’s life difficult in school in reciprocation to parents raising questions, and they didn’t want to endanger their children. (It should be noted, a number of seniors stressed to me that they have concerns about higher taxes given their fixed income status and so they are closely watching these issues within the district).

Everyone I spoke to has requested anonymity, and I met with everyone personally just to ensure their identities and positions.
There are many questions that have come from these meetings and I will be presenting them in a series of pieces, starting today. These questions will also be sent to the board directly and presented at the next board meeting. I am hopeful that the board president will address these questions as they’re very important to these staff and parents. They’re also important to Huntington Beach residents that don’t have kids in the district because after all, we are all taxpayers and some of these matters involve many tax dollars. In short, many different kinds of people have a stake in the OVSD.

Here are the first questions, collectively, from the staff, parents and citizens:

  1. We have  heard rumors that OVSD is going for a bond this election year. Is this true?

  1.  If the answer is yes, where is the money coming from to do the bond campaign? Also if the answer is yes, why has there has been no transparency in the process?

  1. We understand that the district is in major debt, we hear numbers of $30,000,000 and that the OVSD has been going to the state pleading hardship.  We have also heard that the long and short term leases have been all but spent to take out CoP’s (Certificates of Participation) to cover the debt. Is the plan to use the bond to wipe out that debt?

  1. We have also heard the district got approximately 4 million dollars in extra revenue from the state. If that is accurate, what portion of that money was used to off set the district’s debt?

  1. Were raises given last year despite the growing debt?

  1. Are raises being given this year despite all of the debt?

  1.  We also understand that there are less children attending OVSD this year, which of course equals less revenue. Yet it appears many new employees were hired this school year. So less students = more staff? Could you please explain?
  1. In regards to the asbestos, the numbers we saw quoted in the papers were not the total cost to do the construction and asbestos abatement. Missing, in our opinion, were things like, transportation of the students while the schools were closed, costs to get the schools ready for children to attend schools in different districts, costs of trustee Tarvin providing lunches for the teachers and staff, paying teachers for their transportation costs, etc… How much did all of those additional things come to?

  1. Was ALL the asbestos removed from the schools like trustee Tarvin promised?

10. If not, why not?

We would appreciate your answers to these questions. In the spirit of transparency, openness and honesty, you are elected to answer questions such as these and we look forward to your replies.
Thank you.

A Citizen Defends Himself Against an HB Planning Commissioner

I will admit I do not normally agree with local activist Kim Kramer but his recent public comments in regards to HB Planning Commissioner Michael Hoskinson, I found quite powerful. Apparently, Mr. Kramer had spoken last November 10 at a PC meeting. As he explains in the 3 minute video, after submitting letters regarding a late night operators permit, he and his fellow supporters were publicly vilified by  Hoskinson – actually referred to as “messianic jihadists, zealots and extremists,” simply for presenting an opposing point of view.

As Mr. Kramer effectively details, public officials must consider all sides without prejudice or bias and that their code of ethics includes that they “understand that the community expects them to serve with dignity and respect as well as be an agent of the democratic process- with patience, courtesy, civility and respect.” But Kramer really nails it down by talking about  the silencing of free speech  when government officials begin to attack and intimidate private citizens. Watch for yourself and decide – but also consider – this YouTube link was actually posted by Hoskinson himself with this caption: “Kim Kramer attempting to attack me personally at Planning Commission November 24th, 2015.”

Attack him personally? By holding him accountable for his own words and behavior?

Now, Mr. Hoskinson’s points of view are a matter of public record. A cursory glance at his personal Facebook reveals a lot. Here are just a few of the things he has recently posted:

Is a government official entitled to a public point of view? Of course. But are citizens also allowed to speak out and call for the replacement of someone that clearly espouses extremist views, attacks the public, and potentially embarrasses the city he works for?

Absolutely.

I’d recently contacted my friend Erik Peterson, the councilman that appointed Hoskinson, to make him aware of other concerns I have about his appointee in regards to online behavior toward myself (and my son). I find his behavior utterly irresponsible and unbecoming a Huntington Beach official representative. But for me, Mr. Kramer’s comments ring strongest of all in making a case against Hoskinson.

It was not that long ago that the OC Weekly called out the planning commissioner for this:

http://www.ocweekly.com/news/huntington-beach-planning-commisioner-michael-hoskinson-adds-kid-basher-to-his-hate-train-6480214

Screen Shot 2016-03-11 at 12.09.55 PM.png

Additionally, Hoskinson’s public, self-generated mania regarding what he perceives as a subversive government plan called “Agenda 21” (here’s his own Agenda 21 video channel)  along with other conspiratorial theories, in my opinion, further speak to the need for this to be addressed by city council. Personally, based on his public behavior, I think he is terrible representation for the city and needs to be replaced.

Most recently, just several weeks ago, he posted this creepy manifesto; a one-hour long video featuring himself, with the following description:

“The civilised world has been thoroughly saturated with Christianity for 2000 years, any country grounded in Christian values cannot be overthrown therefore, until those roots are cut, but to cut the roots, to change culture, a long march through the institutions is necessary. Only then will power fall into our laps like ripened fruit.” – Antonio Gramsci

So began the destruction of the Western World, perpetrated by the Frankfurt School.

The Frankfurt School, also known as the Institute of Social Research (Institut für Sozialforschung), is a social and political philosophical movement of thought located in Frankfurt, Germany. It is the original source of what is known as Critical Theory. The Institute was founded, thanks to a donation by Felix Weil in 1923, with the aim of developing Marxist studies in Germany. The Institute eventually generated a specific school of thought after 1933 when the Nazis forced it to close and move to the United States, where it found hospitality at Columbia University, New York. From there their philosophy spread through Academia, Religion, Media, Entertainment and Government and morphed into what we now know as the cultural disease of Political Correctness.

Michael Hoskinson is a businessman and currently serving as a Planning Commissioner in Huntington Beach, CA. He has been involved in Conservative issues and politics for nearly a decade. If you would like him to speak to your group please send an email to liberalnarrative@gmail.com.”

A link to the video follows, but again, I have serious concerns about the appropriateness of a sitting city official publicly pushing such a public, extremist agenda. As a planning commissioner, his vote wields much power in the city, and I would encourage Councilman Peterson to act on this in as swift a manner as possible (lest any more citizens get referring to at a city meeting as “messianic jihadists” simply for speaking out).

UPDATE: Further embarrassing Erik Peterson, the councilman that appointed him, Planning Commissioner Hoskinson has posted a link to this blog (on a hate forum, more on that in an upcoming post) with a snarky line inferring that someone mentioned money he gets paid for spewing his hate. Nobody mentioned money – just fanaticism, extremism and racism. Note how none of those were addressed. Hopefully council will do the right thing and relieve this person of his duties so he can stop embarrassing the city (though no doubt he’ll continue to embarrass himself).

Audio edition: An Interview With Inspector Paul Moberly

FB_20151203_00_12_41_Saved_Picture.jpg

In my opinion, based on interviews I’ve done and after reviewing many documents, the fall ’14 asbestos scandal in the OVSD was a “cooked-up” controversy that was used as a tool to manipulate the election that year and flip the school board, thus creating a heavily pro-union voting bloc – which happened on election day that year. The only thing it appears the colluding group didn’t count on or plan for were the Federal and State mandated asbestos protocols which have destroyed the financial stability of the district.

In the coming months I will share some of what I have learned; and why I think the “scandal” was predicated by a single asbestos fiber, and how additional evidence was then manipulated to create hysteria which ultimately misled many families and created chaos within the district. Again, that is my opinion after several months of research, all unpaid and on my own time.

In the meantime, a group of parents had approached me and asked if it might be possible to track down an inspector named Paul Moberly, the DSA Inspector who they felt might have information about asbestos removal at OVSD schools (he was terminated by Sandy Pringle Associates immediately upon the scandal breaking).  His name has come up recently in a number of Facebook discussions and at one point, Trustee President Gina Clayton Tarvin explained in a public post to a parent why she thought he was fired. In the second part of my interview, Mr. Moberly addresses her accusations directly.

For the record, given that Mr. Moberly claims to have received phone calls from both Pres. Tarvin and trustee John Briscoe. Surf City Chronicles reached out to both of them individually to see if they would confirm or deny that accusation, and they were both offered an opportunity to lend their own quotes to this article. Both Briscoe and Clayton-Tarvin declined to respond.

Here is part 1 of the interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQR4PsPtDr4&feature=youtu.be

Here is Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cI9CtR19kig&feature=youtu.be

Again, in part 2 of the interview, Mr. Moberly addresses the following Q/A with district parent Jim Sagara to OVSD Trustee President Gina Clayton Tarvin.

Question from district parent Jim Sagara to OVSD Trustee President Gina Clayton Tarvin:

Sagara: Who is Paul Moberly and was he fired from his position as inspector? Who fired him and why? I have an archived Facebook post in which he briefly tells of violations that his reports fell on deaf ears, and have also read a parent’s account of speaking to him. Were District officials asked to come to construction sites to observe violations? Did they show up and where is the documentation? Are there other violations that have been reported, that as of yet have not been made public? Why have no public statements from Mr. Moberly been forthcoming?

Clayton-Tarvin: Paul Moberly was the DSA inspector for the Mesa View and Hope View projects. Mr. Moberly was hired to inspect project drawings and specifications. Typically the DSA project inspector is responsible to oversee all aspects of the construction project pursuant to the requirements of the DSA approved plans and specifications, except for certain areas that are contracted under the DSA inspector’s oversight called special inspection. Asbestos operations are usually performed with special contractors and overseen by special inspection by a Certified Asbestos contractor who is able to wear protective gear and both observe and test the asbestos abatement. In this case, the special asbestos inspection company was Patriot Environmental. While Patriot Environmental was responsible to oversee all aspects of asbestos abatement at all eleven (11) schools, it is unclear whether Patriot Environmental was overseeing the Mesa View Roof removal. The District has made inquiries with Patriot Environmental, however, Patriot Environmental has not responded as to whether they were performing special inspection or if Mr. Moberly was undertaking the special inspection.

There is a typical protocol where the inspector is required to notify the contractor that there is a safety deviation. Mr. Moberly noted issues with transite roof tile removal on July 17 and July 18, 2014, when there was no environmental inspection company on site. There is a Notice of Deviation to Chapman Coast roofing dated July 31, 2014. However, other than noting the failure to comply with specified safety requirements, there is no notification of improper asbestos removal to B&M Tear Off.

There was no special inspection provided on Mesa View and Mr. Moberly did not request special inspection be hired to oversee the Mesa View roof removal operation. Thus, despite having the opportunity to stop construction and the removal of asbestos, it appears that Mr. Moberly failed to do so. When there was an asbestos violation on Saturday, August 23, 2014, a day when SCAQMD was not in operation, rather than notify the contractor to stop the improper asbestos removal, Mr. Moberly appears to have allowed the entire roof removal without a notice of non-conformance or any attempt to stop the work.

The District did not ask for Mr. Moberly to be removed from the Mesa View and Hope View projects on September 27, 2014. The District learned that the inspection company had Mr. Moberly removed, but the exact reasons are unclear. The District did receive a threatening e-mail indicating that Mr. Moberly planned on notifying the press of asbestos oversight issues that appear to have occurred and were resolved over a month prior to Mr. Moberly being removed from the projects. It appears that Mr. Moberly notified Kacey Montoya of KTLA the evening after he was removed from the projects. The District is not aware of any attempts to notify the District that work should be stopped and there is no written record of any notifications to the District that there was an asbestos issue prior to the issue coming to light on the evening news on September 27, 2014.

The only time the District is aware that Mr. Moberly was going to notify the District of asbestos or construction problems was in Mr. Moberly’s September 27, 2014 e-mail correspondence that was written only to the construction manager, the architect, and Mr. Moberly’s employer. A copy of the e- mail was provided to the District on October 2, 2014. We are unaware of any notification from Mr. Moberly. In fact, when the evening news addressed asbestos violations, multiple District administrators tried to reach Mr. Moberly to ascertain more information about the concerns that were being complained of, but Mr. Moberly did not return telephone calls.

The Knott’s Berry Farm/Huntington Beach Connection

A few years ago, I wrote this in a column about the connection between Knott’s Berry Farm and HB:

Some of you may be aware that I host, along with Maria Hall-Brown, a segment on PBS SoCal called “Forgotten OC.” Each week, we travel the county in search of interesting historic landmarks and places where history took place.

As much as I can, I like to focus our attention on Huntington Beach because I live here, and also because to me, historically, it’s the most interesting city in Orange County. Going back to the Native Americans who lived along the Bolsa Chica Mesa, to the agriculture and industries in the early 1900s, the oil, the aerospace, the surfing — we live in a region that has experienced many dramatic chapters.

I was reminded of another one last week when Maria and I set off to tape some new episodes.

You’re probably aware that Warner Avenue, Talbert Avenue and a host of other streets were named for notable individuals. But do you know the story of Speer Avenue?

Located just off Beach Boulevard near Slater Avenue, Speer borders what used to be called the Liberty Park section of Huntington Beach. Maria and I (along with our cameraman John and my son, Charlie) walked the street in search of the building numbered 7862. We found it, and while it wasn’t the old structure I’d hoped to find, it was still the former site of a significant local landmark.

It was where a home was once owned by a man named Marion Speer. Born in Texas in 1885, he arrived in Huntington Beach in the 1920s. A western history buff, Speer traveled the country extensively with his wife, collecting artifacts. He even wrote a book, “Western Trails,” which was published in 1932.

In 1937, he built the house that had once stood at 7862, and it became a reliquary for his ever-growing collection. Soon, he had a museum on his hands, named appropriately enough the Marion Speer’s Western Trails Museum. By the mid-1940s, a third wing had been added to help house the arrowheads, railroad spikes, guns, flags and other artifacts.

Schoolchildren would visit regularly, as would tourists and locals. It was one of the most popular places to visit in Huntington Beach.

In 1956, Speer made a deal with his friend Walter Knott to have everything moved for display to Knott’s Berry Farm, provided Knott built a structure to house the collection, which Knott did. Speer was the curator at the museum at Knott’s until 1969, and he died in Fullerton in 1978. So when you visit the Western Museum at Knott’s today, perhaps pause to remember Speer, who made it all possible.

Maria and knocked on the door at the address the day we shot and a young woman who lives there now was completely unaware of the history there. But now she knows, as do you.

This weekend – I spoke about the history and origins of Knotts Berry Farm on C-SPAN – cue up to 9:20 – a fascinating story if you’ve never heard it.

IN HER OWN WORDS- An HB Resident And The Price She Paid For Making An Innocent Remark About Rainbow Environmental Services

IMG_3166

After finally being sent the staff social media policies for the Ocean View School District (by a staffer I reached out to separately  – my requests to superintendent Carol Hansen were completely ignored), I felt compelled to revisit and report on an incident that took place in the summer of 2015. It’s an event that illustrates, in my opinion, not just an egregious abuse of these policies, but more importantly perhaps, a firsthand view of the tactics being employed by OVSD Trustee President Gina Clayton Tarvin. I’ve previously documented her efforts as she attempts to intimidate, harass and silence members of the community, but I’m not sure anything better illustrates just what she will do to snuff out opposing voices than this incident.
This is the story.

I was sitting at dinner with my husband, At Red Table in Huntington Harbour. Then all of a sudden my phone started blowing up with Facebook messages. I had no clue what was going on. It was kind of shocking to read what my friends were sending to me. ‘You have to see this.’  ‘Look what she’s doing to you.’ ‘Who is she?’ ‘WTF?!’

Then I saw.
“Shipley Mar–” as she went by on Facebook last year (employing a partial alias as a safety measure due to personal safety reasons – today “Shipley Marmz”) had never met or spoken to Gina Clayton Tarvin in May of 2015.  She didn’t even know who she was. And she was unaware of the newly raging controversy between the district, Rainbow/Republic disposal, the lawsuits, the attacks and the heated online debates.
Shipley, like many other people during that time (myself included,) took a tour of the Rainbow facility to form her own opinion about how they worked and managed. But unlike most of us, she took the tour not connected to any issue with the school district, but because a friend of hers that was involved in helping mitigate the effects of Styrofoam on the environment, invited her along. “I was curious if the idea of banning Styrofoam was a good one,” she told me. “I wanted to see how they dealt with it.”
Well, Shipley was impressed by how the handled Styrofoam. In fact, she was also taken with, in her opinion, how well managed the place was. And it made her focus more on what was being said in public forums. “Right after the tour, that day, I paid closer attention to the discussion on Facebook about Rainbow. It seemed like a lot of people had very strong opinions and even agendas in regards to Rainbow. All I did was comment in a forum called The Voice that I thought people should do their own research and not get led along by others. That was it. I didn’t smell anything there, I thought it was clean, given what they do, and I expressed that. I didn’t address anyone specifically, let alone Gina Clayton Tarvin. Again I had no clue who she even was.  That’s why I was so shocked in the restaurant by the attack.”
This was the comment posted by Trustee President Gina Clayton Tarvin:

Shipley was shocked to read these details/accusations, posed as questions. First, by Clayton Tarvin exposing Shipley’s her real name (which I have blocked for privacy reasons), Shipley believed she was placed in danger (again, due to a personal reason). How did Clayton Tarvin even get that information? Second, how did Clayton Tarvin know where Shipley had worked (26 years earlier)? (company name also masked for privacy reasons)  Third, why on earth would ANYONE (let alone an elected official) be so grossly irresponsible and reckless as to deliberately share in public such personal information, while also attempting to create false motive for why Shipley posted in the first place? (Clayton Tarvin’s original comment would eventually be deleted by forum administrators, due to the fact that personal information was being shared without permission).

And it got worse. According to Shipley, in other (now deleted) comments, Clayton Tarvin actually threatened to report Shipley to Facebook for using a fake name and also accused her of being a fake account altogether.

Clayton Tarvin then rejoined the discussion Shipley was having with a gentleman (name masked for privacy) to issue her version of an “apology.” Note, she has just clearly shared private personal information in a vicious and strangely accusatory way, but does not want Shipley to feel as if she has been “treated unjustly.” (In my opinion, this “explanation” borders on the delusional.)

Shipley strongly challenged what Clayton Tarvin had done to her, and challenged the ‘non apology” – which Clayton Tarvin repeated, bizarrely, saying had meant no harm. (And I will agree with Shipley’s observation that the “excuse” feels like it was directed by a lawyer.)

I interviewed Shipley about this clearly unsettling and disturbing attack. Here is our discussion.
Shipley, you knew nothing about the OVSD situation with Rainbow when this took place?
No. Some friends of mine had created something called the “Styrofoam Challenge” and I tagged along with them on a tour of Rainbow to see how they deal with Styrofoam. I knew nothing about all of the school fighting. I didn’t know anything about lawsuits at first. This was my first contact ever with Gina Clayton Tarvin. It was like walking down the street and having a stranger come up and punch you in the face. That’s how I felt the night at the restaurant when I read what she did. I literally had read one thread about this issue and from that it seemed clear to me that yes, some people had an agenda. It was the idea of the lawsuits that made me think that. It just seemed weird. And then all I was trying to do was give another perspective of someone that had actually been to Rainbow. I have a very sensitive sense of smell and I was just being honest. I didn’t smell anything there. I never expected anyone to flip out or come after me just for stating my opinion.
What was your initial reaction to her comments?
I was in shock. I mean, where did she get this information?  I did change my name, but nobody that knows my current name would know where I worked back then. I was furious. A lot of other people were too and started calling her out for obviously having done a background check on me or something. She eventually answered that someone who “knows” me had told her all of this information. But that makes no sense. Nobody that knows my current name would ever know where I worked in 1988. So I simply do not believe her. My opinion is that somehow she got a hold of my social security number to find out where I had worked and god knows what else. And why would she just launch into an attack like with hearsay from someone? Her explanation makes no sense.  And none of this situation had any affect on me at all since I don’t live anywhere near the site. With no dog in the fight, I was an absolutely objective observer with no bias.
Well she implies in her comment that you’ve got a conflict of interest due to  a company you  either work for now or once worked for. Is there any basis at all for that charge?
It’s preposterous. The company I worked for is a distributor of vacuum pumps and compressors. I handled a lot of accounts there back then but I have absolutely no idea if  Rainbow ever had an account there. If they did in 1988, I have zero idea. No clue. I know I didn’t work on anything for them there. Think about this. This is more than 25 YEARS AGO. I literally had not worked there since the 1980s yet here is this woman asking if I worked there now. Also, did she dig to find out what vendors Rainbow was using back then? How far did she go with this? It was just so shocking, all of it. Also, I had a stalker in my past, it’s why I don’t use my name on Facebook and here is this woman, an elected official by the way, not just revealing my name but also threatening to report me to Facebook for not even being a real person. It was crazy. Also, when we were at Rainbow, the only bird I saw was the hawk, but she and others were saying the dump was a bird fest. Also that it smelled terrible. That was not my experience and I said so. I didn’t call anyone a liar; I just said my experience was different. And then the attack came.
Did you consider suing her?
I had friends that wanted me to. But I just figured it would be hard to prove damages. I mean, if the stalker had come after me then for sure there would’ve been damages. But in the end, I think her tactics did more damage to her then anything that I could do. It’s why I think it’s important to remind people of this.
Did Gina Clayton Tarvin ever reach out to you privately to explain of truly apologize for what she did to you? Not in a public forum but offline?
No. Never. There was never a private word from her.
Clayton Tarvin is up for re-election this year in November. Do you think she deserves to be re-elected?
I don’t think she’s fit to serve the public. I mean, someone didn’t agree with her and she went after them in this really vicious, suspicious and aggressive way. If she is going to use those thug tactics in public, then what is she doing in private? Who is she blackmailing and who is she threatening? Whose job is she trying to get taken away? I don’t know, but I think the kids and parents and staff in the school district deserve better. I’m a voter, I may not have kids in the OVSD, but I do not think she should be an elected official in the city. Just think about what she did here.
Do you consider these to have been intimidation tactics designed to make you shut up and go away?
Absolutely. For sure. I firmly believe that was her intent. And I think that’s why she did it publicly. It was her way of saying “See what happens when you disagree with me? See what happens when you dare do your own research and form your own opinion that goes against mine?” Its’s like the person that walks into a bar and punches someone hard in the face to make everyone scared of them. To send a message. A warning. I think she swung at the first person that made her mad to say to everyone, “See what I can do? Anyone else have anything that they don’t want made public? Then go ahead and disagree with me and see what happens.”

In Part II of this piece I will look at the new levels these tactics have been taken to, thanks in large part to close friend and confidante of the Trustee President, a blogger whose threats and intimidation regarding any comments relating to Gina Clayton Tarvin have now become part of the attack.
POST SCRIPT: These are the social media guidelines for staffers in the OVSD. In my opinion, Clayton Tarvin has clearly violated a number of these rules and should be held accountable for her attack on this private citizen, through a formal complaint both to the OVSD and the district where she teaches.
